The John Foran House is of heritage interest for its historical value based on its association with one of the largest families in the Township of Hull. The house was built for John Foran (died 1896) in 1858. He emigrated from Ireland in 1829 to settle in Aylmer and engage in the timber trade. Foran quickly became a successful timber merchant. His social role is also noteworthy. A justice of the peace for many years, he was one of the first elected councillors of the new village of Aylmer in 1847. His son Thomas Patrick (1849-1939), who used the house as a summer residence from 1914, was a famous law clerk who practised criminal law in Hull for more than 50 years. Recognized as one of Canada's finest lawyers, he was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1894. Philip, his only son who occupied the house from 1961, also practised law in Hull for more than half a century. The John Foran House commemorates the Foran family who made a significant contribution to the development of the Township of Hull.
The John Foran House is also of heritage interest for its architectural value. Although the house has undergone several modifications, its neoclassical features are still present. They are particularly visible in the two-and-a-half-storey massing, the gable roof, the austerity and symmetry of the composition, and in decorative elements such as modillions and pediments.
The John Foran House is also of heritage interest because of its historical value linked to its establishment. In the 1850s, the paving of Aylmer Road encouraged several landowners to settle on the edge of this country road to enjoy the benefits of rural life. This is the case of John Foran who, in 1858, had an imposing stone house built there. The John-Foran House has preserved its original siting characteristics, namely its location set back from Aylmer Road on a large wooded lot and a monumental entrance placed in the axis of the main entrance.
